“Do you pay for good press or tell me how did MeDine get covered in many newspapers?” This was the question our founder heard yesterday when he had interacted with someone. ‘Many’ is relative and we understand that however the topic is on PR and paid publicity.
Of course the answer was affirmative -we do pay a huge price for getting press coverage in the form of going that extra mile and delivering a superior customer experience or in the form of going out of way to service a customer who probably doesn’t even care about us or remember us . We do pay with rewards to people who use our app and eat anywhere they like ! We do pay when we sponsor free movie tickets through our partner bookmyshow or free e-gift vouchers of flipkart/amazon/jabong etc when someone redeems their rewards.
Just yesterday we received one more request asking us to share our story on a newsportal. The person apparently has a PR agency and this agency charges people to make sure you are everywhere in the press/tv channels etc. We do not understand how can one generate press as an early stage start up unless someone is interested and news reads news. So, we learnt that paying Rs.X per year you have a combo (much like our meal combos :-)) package of articles, tv airtime, news releases, authors writing about you etc. Though this may happen, we always thought start up eco system is very sensible not to allow unnecessary mediators who claim to know newspaper editors, tv channel anchors etc and of course! VCs, investors are close buddies for these guys. Has anyone fallen prey to such characters ? Again this channel may also really work, just that we are not aware of.. Unless you have 100s of millions in funding, which start up can afford to pay for press ? What has been your experience ?
